Team

Arpana Church, PhD

Arpana Church, PhD is an associate professor and a globally and nationally known researcher in the field of brain-gut microbiome science. She is also the Director of the neuroimaging core and co-director of the UCLA Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center. She is trained as a psychologist with expertise in neuroscience. Arpana’s early life experiences made her realize that we can make decisions to better our lives. Then began her path to better understanding the factors whether inside or outside our mind that impact our health and wellbeing. As a result, her passion is geared around investigating the intersection of environmental factors like diet, physical activity, social support impact brain-gut health. She wants to uncover and share the secrets to a balanced and healthy life based on brain and the gut microbiome.

Tien S. Dong MD, PhD

Tien Dong MD, PhD is a clinician and researcher in the field of the gut microbiome. He is a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist and has over 10 years of experience working in the field of academia. Tien completed his B.S. in Biological Sciences at Stanford University, his M.D. at the University of Chicago, and his PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a current clinician scientist at UCLA and practices at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital while focusing on the care of those with fatty liver disease. He is the director of UCLA Microbiome Center Biorepository and winner of the UCLA Innovator Award. His research has been published in a number of scientific journals including Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gut Microbes, Microbiome, and Scientific Reports.
